Ribamontán al Mar is one of Spain’s best-kept surfing secrets.

It is an area rich in surfing history with a tradition of  producing world class surfers. The prevailing winds, Atlantic swells, Biscay’s enormous depth and the orientation of Somo beach combine to produce quality surf breaks to suit all levels of surfers. Its well connected by road to Santander and Bilbao via the A8/E70 Motorway and Highway CA-141, or by a regular boat service across the bay from Santander to Somo. Surrounded by lush landscapes, a cool surf scene,surf schools to help all learner and intermediate surfers and five unique surf spots to choose from, you must......come surf our coast.

LANGRE: Langre is a truly beautiful beach. Surfing takes place on the 1000 meter main beach surrounded by spectacular cliffs and grazing grounds. This wave is a favourite for long-boarders and always has a strong international presence in the water.

  • Optimum wind direction: S, SW, Not great with Easterlies, but cliffs offer good protection from NW when Somo and Loredo are onshore.
  • Optimum tide: varies depending on the sand banks and skill level.
  • Ideal swell size, 4ft to 6ft.
  • Waves: Lefts and rights.
  • Ideal for beginners when tide is high. Low tide to mid tide,great for intermediates.

LOREDO: Further up Somo beach or following the SP-4141 past Somo is the village of  Loredo. This charming village has  a growing surf scene, and is a lot quieter than Somo. Right next door to Somo it offers a great escape from the summer madness for all those who are seeking a quiet retreat. The vibe in the water is much more learner orientated.

  • Optimum wind direction: S, SE, E.
  • Optimum tide: Mid to High Tide.
  • Ideal swell size, 4ft to 6ft.
  • Waves: Mostly rights with some left sections.
  • Ideal for beginners when tide is high.
  • Always a bit smaller than Somo. Offers good alternative for beginners when Somo gets too heavy.
Beach Location

SOMO: Somo beach is 2 km of  golden sand that stretches from “el Puntal” up to the village of Loredo. The beach is flanked by urban areas, sand dunes and pine forests. The vibe is very much surf orientated. The beach always offers a variety of quality peaks to choose from.

  • Optimum tide: varies depending on the sand banks and skill level.
  • Ideal swell size, 4ft to 6ft.
  • Waves: Lefts and rights.
  • Ideal for beginners when tide is high. Low tide to mid tide is great for intermediates.
Beach Location

GALIZANO (La Lastra): Small beach flanked by reefs and high cliffs. The actual beach-front is relatively narrow, however its a very long beach. On high tide its great for kids because of all the rock pools that appear.

  • Optimum wind direction: S, E, NE.
  • Optimum tide: Low to Medium
  • Ideal swell size: 4ft
  • Waves: Lefts and rights.
  • Level required: Intermediate

Beach Location

SANTA MARINA (La Isla): Legendary spot for big wave surfing. Few have the skills required to surf this wave yet more and more surfers are willing to give it a go. Big wave board and the right leash are a must.....

  • Reef break·Needs large swell to work.
  • Optimum wind direction: NE, E.
  • Ideal size: 6ft to 12ft.
  • Wave: Powerful long rights.
  • Level required: Experienced surfers only.
